★The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

I read "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" written by Washington Irving. This is in the same book of "Rip Van Winkle".

We learned about it and we watched it on DVD at American Literary History class. The book of it and the DVD of it were a little different. Ichabod Crane is a teacher in the book but he is a lawyer in the DVD.
I think it was a scary story.

Tarry Town was a small town near the Hudson River. Sleepy Hollow was a place near the town.
"There are ghosts in Sleepy Hollow," some people said.

Ichabod Crane was a teacher in Tarry Town. He wanted to marry Katrina Van Tassel who was very, very beautiful girl. Her father had a big farm so he wanted it too. However, a lot of men liked Katrina. Brom Van Brunt thought that Ichabod was his rival.

One day, Baltus Van Tassel, Katrina's father invited many people to his farm in order to eat and talk. Ichabod and Brom were invited, of course. Ichabod wanted to get there earlier than Brom so he went to borrow a horse at Hans Van Ripper's house. He could have Gunpowder which was very old horse. Gunpowder had only one eye so he couldn't run very quickly.

When he arrived at the farm, there were a lot of people there. Katrina and Brom were there too, but he could dance with her. Brom watched them and he was unhappy.

Some people from Sleepy Hollow talked about the strange noises and ghosts there.

One story was very interesting. It was a story about a horse rider. He was a ghost and he didn't have a head! He lived in Sleepy Hollow, and the people were afraid of him.
"Remember Mr. Brouwer? He went to Sleepy Hollow one night, and the ghost was there. He threw Mr. Brouwer in the small river."
"I know that ghost," Brom said. "He was in Sleepy Hollow one night, and I was there, too. But I'm a very good horse rider and he didn't catch me." He had a smile on his face.
Some people didn't believe him, but Ichabod believed every story.
Ichabod wanted to stay at the Van Tassels' house in order to talk to Katrina but she didn't want to do. He had to go home by way of Sleepy Hollow. He was afraid because he remembered the ghost stories but his horse couldn't walked quickly.

The strange man and his horse were there. Ichabod looked at the man. Then the man came near Ichabod. He didn't have a head! It was the ghost! Ichabod looked again. The ghost's head was there, but it was on the horse's back. Ichabod was very afraid now.
"Run!" Ichabod said to his horse.
But the ghost's horse came after him. The two horses went quickly down the road. The ghost was a very good rider, but Ichabod's horse went in front of the ghost. Ichabod looked behind him. The ghost had his head in his hands. Then the ghost threw his head at Ichabod!
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Ichabod said.

After the night, Ichabod was not anywhere in Tarry Town, though his horse came back to Hans Van Ripper's house. There was a hat near the Sleepy Hollow and the hat was his hat. A pumpkin was near the hat so people thought the ghost threw it at him and he was dead. The people in Taarry Town were very sad because they liked Ichabod. However Katrina married Brom.

A long time after, an old farmer found Ichabod in New York. He was alive! The farmer told the people in Tarry Town about him and the ghost. Brom and Katrina were there but Brom was very happy now.

I think that the ghost in Sleepy Hollow was Brom, because he was a good horse rider and he doesn't like Ichabod. The night was very dark so Ichabod might think a pumpkin was the head of the ghost. However I don't understand why Ichabod went to New York. It's strange!

I recommend Rip Van Winkle rather than The Legend of Sleepy Hollow when you read this book, because I think Rip was strange and interesting but Sleepy Hollow was only strange.

See you again:)

My favorite movie

My favorite movie is "SWING GIRLS" which is a Japanese movie directed by Shinobu Yaguchi. It is about a big band at a high school. Juri Ueno who is a Japanese actress is main actress. I like the movie because I belonged to the brass band club when it was released. We played some songs that are used in the movie at our school festival. These songs are jazz music and I like "Sing Sing Sing" the best. After I watched the movie, I got to like jazz and saxophone.

☆Rip Van Winkle

I read Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by Washington Irving. I write about Rip Van Winkle at first.

I learned about Washington Irving on American Literary History class. I was surprised that I found this book at the school Library, because I think this novel is difficult to read in English. However, it is easy to read so I recommend it, if you have an interest in this novel!!

Rip Van Winkle was liked by the people in the town because he liked talking to them and helping them. He was a farmer but he didn't like working. He always went to the bar in order to talk to his friends so his wife was very angry.

The name of the bar was the King George. King George was the British king, and America was British then.
I think it is an important point!

One day, Rip went to the mountains with his dog, Wolf, because he didn't want to see his wife. The mountains were strange because strange noises came from there sometimes.
When they started to come back, there was a noise: "Rip Van Winkle! Rip Van Winkle!" Rip asked "Who's calling my name?" but anyone didn't answer and it was quiet there so they were afraid.
Then Rip looked down there and there was an old men. He had a lot of white hair and a long white beard, and he had a big barrel on his back so he walked up there slowly. Rip try to talk him, but he didn't answer. It was strange but Rip helped him by bringing his barrel on Rip's back.
They came to a big building in the mountains and there were a lot of old men having very long white beards. They also ignored Rip but he had a drink from the barrel with them. He was happy because he liked it and his wife was't here. After he drank too much, he started to sleep.

When Rip opened his eyes, there were no men and Wolf. He also looked for the big building but it wasn't here. He wanted to find his dog but he wasn't here too, so Rip walked down there to his town.
There were the people and the buildings that he didn't know in his town. He went to his house and he find a dog but he didn't know him. Then he went to the bar because he wanted to meet his friends.

The name of the bar wasn't the King George. It had a new name--The Union Hotel.
America had a war with Britain and now it is a new country--the United States of America!
There were not his friends there and the men in the bar told Rip that his friends were dead.

He was unhappy and he got out there slowly. A young woman came to the hotel then. She was Rip's daughter and she had her child!!

"Daughter, I don't understand. Yesterday, you were a child, and now you're not. Yesterday, I was young, and today I'm old. Yesterday, I had friends at this bar, and today they're not here. They're dead. I don't understand," Rip said.
"Father, it wasn't yesterday. You walked to the mountains with your dog in 1770. Now it's 1790. Twenty years, father, twenty years!" she answered.

I don't know whether the strange men in the mountain were ghosts or not, but it is scary that Rip had slept for 20 years!

It is similar to Urashima Taro which is a Japanese fairy tale. Taro went to a strange place called "Ryugu castle" in the sea by riding a turtle which is helped by Taro. He met a princess Oto and he have had a wonderful time there with her for several years. When he come back his real home, he become very old though he should have spent there only several years!

I think it is a little diferent from the Urashima Taro. Taro had a wonderful time with the princess at the castle and Rip had a happy time too, but he spent a time with not talking strange men. I think Rip must be scary at that time.

However, I don't know the details of other tests including interview tests in English and in Japanese. I want to know how it's feeling.
Where I would like to go is Saint Mary University in Canada because I want to learn English and French more. English and French are spoken there so I think Canada is better for me. I also want to make a lot of friends there and I want to teach Japanese and Japanese culture to them.

★DREAMS toward SPACE☆

This is a story I made last year on American Affair class.
If you read and write a comment, I am so happy;)

In 2009, I am an American student. I have gone to Japanese high school for a year.
One day, I met a Japanese friend. She and I were same class at Japanese high school. She became beautiful and she looked very fine. When I found her, I invited her to lunch at a cafe. After we sit down, we start to chat.

"Why do you visit the USA?" I ask.
"Well, do you have a dream? I want to be an astronaut." She answers.
"You will be an astronaut?"
"Yeah, so I decided to study at NASA, and I prepare for it now."

I live in Houston, so I can meet her.

"Really? Great! I don't have a dream yet." I say.
"Then, do you have a person who you respect? I respect Neil Alden Armstrong. Do you know him?" She asks.
"Let me see... I know him! He is the first person who was on the moon, isn't he?"
"Yes, he is."
"I think he has good smile."
"Have you ever met him?"

I answer "no", but I remembered him certainly.

--A few days before, I had a wonderful dream when I was sleeping. I was the Star-Spangled Banner and I went to the moon with Armstrong in 1969. I watched him start to walk on the moon and I heard his famous saying in Apollo 11.
"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
I was impressed by his saying. He looked very happy with his great smile. When he put me up on the moon, he smiled at me. I wanted to watch his smile forever, but I may smile at the earth today.--

"By the way, what do you want to do as an astronaut?" I ask my friend.
"I want to be a first woman who is on the Venus someday." She answers.
"Good for you! Your dream should come true."
"Thank you. I think it is necessary for you to have a dream."
"You are right and I can have a dream just now!"
"Excellent! What is your dream?"
"I will be a designer and I want you to bring a flag which I designed into the Venus!"
"Good idea, because I like the picture you paint! How do you design the flag?"
"I'd like to draw goodwill between Japan and the USA."
"I'm really looking forward to it!"

We wish to realize our dream in the future.

It is all my imagination, so it may have some mistakes.
In other words, it is a fiction story.

☆ISLAND FOR SALE

I read "ISLAND FOR SALE". I think it is a happy ending story and I like it!

There are many islands in the sea near Scotland. This story is about one of these islands. The name of the island is Lana.
Lana isn't big, but it's very beautiful. It's very quiet, too. There are no houses or roads or cars on Lana. But there's a castle. The castle is very old.
A young Scotsman lives in the castle. The Scotsman's name is Duncan McTavish. Duncan lives in the castle with his dog, Jock.

One day in winter, he gets a letter from the electricity company and it says that he must pay £5,000 for them. He use a lot of electric lights in all the rooms, because the castle is very cold and dark. He cannot have such as big money, so he has to sell his island and his castle.

First, Leaping Larry who is the famous American rock star wants to buy the island for his girlfriend. He and his girlfriend, Roxanne with her dog, Bobo come to the island. When they go into the castle, there hasn't been any light already so Roxanne gets angry and she hopes Larry to take her back to home soon. However, Larry will build a big new house there so he doesn't want to go home yet. Duncan and Jock are unhappy to hear that. They go to see the island in Duncan's boat but Roxanne and Larry have a quarrel and they go back to home in the end.

Duncan and Jock are happy again but they don't solve the problem.
He meet a woman painting a picture after Larry and Roxanne go home. Her name is Jean Stewart and she is a teacher at a school across the sea. He talks her about his problem and she tells a good idea to solve it then! She suggests that the people can come the island for holidays, and they can paint pictures of it because she teach them, and they can stay the castle, so he can make a lot of money. Finall, McTavish Painting Holidays are very famous and they have a lot of money so there is no problem with the electricity company. As you can see, Duncan and Jean are married and they have two children - a boy and a girl. They including Jock are very happy now!!

It is better that Duncan doesn't sell his island for Larry. Roxanne may part from Larry after a quarrel. I think Roxanne is happy as long as Bobo is with her so Larry is only unhappy person in the story at the last.
By the way, I notice that "Roxanne" is used in "Billy and the Queen" too, though she is called Rox in it. I think that the name may be seen in the U.K. a lot because these stories are written in British English.

I read it without a dictionary so I think it is easy to read;)

☆LONG-SLEEVED KIMONO★

I had my long-sleeved kimono worn and I had my photo taken on May 15th. Long-sleeved kimono called "Furisode" in Japan. I will wear it on Coming of Age Day again! I think that almost women will wear theirs Furisode then too. It was too tight and it was hard to breathe. However I like it and I want to wear again before Coming of Age Day in order to take photo with my family. Though you may see it Blue in the left picture, it is Green actually.

By the way, I had my face made up and I had my hair set by hairdresser. The right picture is hair pins and hair accessories that I used then. They were over 30! Makeup and hair set finished in a flash! When I came in the studio, the hairdresser asks me how I want to set my hair. Then she and her assistant started to set my hair with making me up.

After I had my photo taken, I went to my grandparent's house. My aunts and cousin came there and they took picture of me because I kept wearing the kimono. I was too tired but I had a good day;)

★Billy and the Queen

I read "Billy and the Queen". I think it was an amusing story.

Billy and Roxanne who is his sister called Rox are staying at their grandmother's house. Billy wants a new bicycle, because his bicycle is very, very old. If he gets a lot of money, Rox wants new one too. "Do you know how I can make a lot of money?" he asks to Gran. She shows him a magazine called Palace. "There's a competition here and the first prize is £500." she says. "Send us a photo of you and the Queen together," he reads.

How do you think they take a photo with the Queen?
They look at the magazine, because it tells when and where the Queen's going to be. They go to the places that the Queen comes, but they can not take a photo. Finally, Rox gets a nice idea! She goes to Madame Tussaud's. They find the Queen and Rox take a photo of Billy standing next to the Queen! However, a Madame Tussaud's guard is very angry. "You can't take photos like that in here. Come on. Give me that camera. Now!" he shouts and follows them. Billy and Rox start to run and they do not stop.

Two weeks later, Gran is talking to her neighbour - Mrs Clark. They are both looking at Palace magazine. Out in the garden, Billy and Rox are riding their new bikes.
"What a beautiful photo!" says Mrs Clark. "And how wonderful for you to have a grandson who knows the Queen. Does he know her well?" "No, not very well," says Gran. She smiles.

By the way, I think Mrs Clark looks like the Queen a little.
The cover of this book is the photo of Billy and the Queen and it is the title of this book!

I know about Madame Tussaud's a little, though I have not been to there. There are many famous people of wax dolls. I want to go there someday.

May 8th:)
I became fine, because I took some medicine that the doctor gave me. I watched "The mystery of Ryoma" at night. It was a TV program that Masato Sakai who is a Japanese actor tried to read a riddle of Ryoma Sakamoto's assassination. ★Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

I saw "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" on DVD yesterday. It called "Night Museum 2" in Japan. I have seen "Night at the Museum" before, so I really wanted to see this movie!

I think it was a adventure movie.
Larry Daley who was a night guard at the American Museum of Natural History 2 years ago finds that the museum will close to renovate and some exhibits will move to The Federal Archives at The Smithsonian Institution. One night, he gets a call from Jedediah who is a miniature of cowboy at the Smithsonian. Jed says that Dexter who is the capuchin monkey stole The Tablet which gives life to exhibits. When Larry goes to the Smithsonian, evil Pharaoh Kahmunrah who is Ahkmenrah's older brother is attacking exhibits from the American Museum. In this way, he and his friends of exhibits fight with Kahmunrah.

There are many exhibits at the Smithsonian including Darth Vader and Oscar the Grouch. The American Museum doesn't have any pictures and photographs, but the Smithsonian have them so all the people in the picture and photograph can move!

I think Jed and Octavius have good friendship:) Jed is captured by Kahmunrah but Octavius helps him bravely!

☆PACO and The Magical Book

I saw "PACO and The Magical Book" on DVD yesterday.
It was a Japanese movie. I think it was a heart-warming story.

There are funny patients in a hospital. A doctor and nurses are also funny.
For example, the doctor likes Peter Pan and he wears costume of Peter Pan, and nurses look like devil, not angel!!

Oonuki who is a patient is hated by other patients, because he always harasses them with his selfishness. One day, he meets Paco who is a girl reading picture book. She smiles at him but he ignores her. Other day, he forgets his lighter and she gives it to him but he hits her in the cheek, because he thought she stole it. The next day, he meets her again but she doesn't remember him. Actually she cannot keep her memories more than one day. However she says 'did you touched my cheek yesteday?' when he touches her cheek. He hears about her sickness from the doctor and he crys as he were a child. He changes his mind from the day and he trys to read her picture book with her everyday. Finally, he suggests that he and all the people in the hospital stage a play from her picture book for her.

By the way, I didn't realize who played Muromachi until the last. In fact Satoshi Tsumabuki did!
I think that Horigome who is played by Sadao Abe was the funniest character.

If you haven't see it yet, I really recommend it for you! You may laugh and cry or be impressed with it;)

I was surprised that I could watch DOES on TV, because DOES is one of my favorite artists recently.

DOES is a band of 3 people from Fukuoka.
It is interesting that their words are Japanese but their music is rock!

They played "BAKUCHI-DANCER" yesterday. That is a song for a movie. The movie is "GINTAMA" which is Japanese comics and animation. DOES has sung 2 songs for animation of "GINTAMA" before.

I like GINTAMA but the animation of it finished before the movie of it starts. I hope the comics of it will continue for a long time. I will write about GINTAMA someday, because the title of this article is "DOES";)

By the way, the pronunciation of DOES is 'doozu' not 'daazu'.
If you have interest in DOES, please rental their CDs.
I recommend "DONTEN", "SHURA" and "BAKUCHI-DANCER", of course!!

See you again:)
